6 "Struggles" That Only Psychology Majors Will Understand

Among all the courses you may take, Psychology is one of the famous picks. Being a Psychology student, I am used to being asked a whole range of ridiculous questions such as "Can you read my mind?" or "Is depression really a disorder?"

Even though the curriculum and course content may seem "common sense", the methods of assessment (i.e. statistical tests and SPSS) and research (i.e. hundreds of peer-reviewed journal articles) makes Psychology a challenging endeavor.

On that note, here are the 6 "Struggles" That Only Psychology Majors Will Understand...

1. PEOPLE ASSUME THAT YOU KNOW WHAT THEY ARE THINKING ABOUT

Most people assume and dare to ask: "can you guess what I am thinking?". No, we are not mind-readers but we use verbal/ non-verbal cues, intuition, and deductive/ inductive reasoning to help us understand what you feel.

2. BEING EVERYONE'S THE SHOULDER TO CRY ON

Your family, friends, or your exes will usually run to you for constructive advise. Often flattering but sometimes weird, people will pour out all their problems to you even though some information are inappropriate
(that your only wish in that moment is to re-do the whole conversation or blast off some place else).

Yes! You may have a power to control a person's choices so please remember to be responsible.

3. LAUGHING AT FREUD

You cannot help but laugh uncontrollably at Freudian theories and Freudian jokes. Some people may even try to make inaccurate references of Freud when they around you.

4. PAINS OF REFERENCING AND FORMATTING

Real talk here…you have to be knowledgeable of APA formatting because you have to analyze and make your own research paper in that format.

Your lecturer will have to let you do everything again if you are not careful enough. Even a slight marginal error or a mis-bolded title will ruin the whole paper.

5. COURSE LIMITATIONS

Basically, majority of your classmates are females that is why people assume that Psychology is a "girly" subject when in fact it is not. Most of Psychology's foundations were built by renowned male figures.

Aside from gender, there is a relatively small amount of lecturers. In my whole Psychological studies, I had about 6 lecturers whom I've grown to know through the whole journey. It may be scarce but it is very intimate.

6. DIAGNOSING EVERYONE YOU KNOW HAS BECOME A HABIT

Despite your lecturer's advice, you start to psychoanalyze your friends and loved ones. Over 2 months in the course, I started to pin-point what childhood experiences brought fourth my mother's personality today.

It may start as fun and games but it get seriously twisted as time passes. So, be cautious.
